Best of England's Forests

England is home to many forests and woods, too many, in fact to list. Many people will have their own fond favourites, whether these are woods close to home or places they like to visit on holiday year after year. Great for walking with dogs or for wildlife watchers, you may spot squirrels or deer when exploring England's woods. The sight of the leaves changing colour through the seasons is not to be missed, along with the light streaming through the trees, which make England's forests and woods ripe for people to enjoy.

South East England and East Anglia:


The New Forest

A national park in Hampshire, the New Forest is known for its beautiful woodlands, heathlands and wild ponies. A delight for walks, cycles and sightseeing in the pretty villages and towns, the New Forest is a great place to explore for a few days or even for a week. Find some inspirational cottages in the New Forest.


Thetford Forest

Managed and protected by the English Forestry Commission, Thetford Forest in Norfolk includes heathlands and woodlands and is a lovely place for walking, cycling and wildlife watching. Follow the paths and enjoy relaxing woodland walks or for a more adrenaline fuelled activity how about a Go Ape experience where you can enjoy zip wiring and high level adventures.

For the easy approach, how about the Segway Experience now on offer in Thetford Forest where you can hop aboard a Segway which will scoot you around the forest trails.


The Forest of Dean and Gloucestershire

Close to the border with Wales in Gloucestershire is the greenery of the Forest of Dean. Visitors to the Forest of Dean may also want to discover the beautiful Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty close by for more time in outstanding countryside. In this tranquil forest you will find walking paths as well as cycle trails where you can discover some of the best of the forest. It's even possible to horse-ride on the bridleways. Another fantastic attraction within the Forest of Dean is Go Ape where you can enjoy spending time amongst the tree tops completing a tree top course, harnessed up for safety, which is rounded off with a fantastic zip-wire experience. Another possibility for those aged 10 and over is a Segway Experience where you can use two wheels to transport you around the forest.


North of England

Sherwood Forest

Sherwood Forest in Robin Hood Country is bound to appeal to those with an interest in and love for the legend of Robin Hood. Discover where Robin Hood and his merry man reportedly spent their time along with some beautiful old trees which are said to be amongst the oldest in Europe. The star attraction of Sherwood Forest has to be the Major Oak, a tree which is said to be an amazing 800 years old and is also according to legend where Robin Hood used to hide out.
